What is the difference between a custom designed website and a templated site?

In terms of how they function there is no difference. A custom design simply means that a designer sat in front of blank screen waiting for inspiration. Once inspired, the designer, for all intents and purposes, designs a custom template.

All highly functional, self-managed websites are templated. If they weren't, only people proficient in HTML could manage them. The question is: where did the template come from? Was it selected from a catalog of pre-designed home pages? Or, was it designed from the ground up just for you?

The only functional difference? Price. With a custom site, you pay for all that "blank screen" time.
